So..K finally popped the question

I'm officially engaged!

He popped the question during our third year anniversary. I wasn't expecting it to be so early, but oh well, pleasant surprise! :D

We went to Morton's for dinner that night. I have no idea why but I was feel out of place at such restaurants.

It was a weekday but the place was packed. Didn't know there were so many rich people around. i mean, Morton's isn't dinner that you can simply afford everyday but the people looked real at home there.

Gigantic piece of bread. None of that thinly-sliced nonsense. okay I kid. But the bread here is seriously huge. You can like, make a meal out of it.

$90 seafood chilled platter. I got a shock when K ordered this because come on, there's like 8 or 9 pieces of food so basically you're paying $10 per bite. But to be honest it was really good la, you can tell the seafood was really fresh and the prawn...omg the prawn..so succulent.

T-bone steak. Ok la the picture isn't very well-taken because the lighting is really dim. But you can see how juicy that piece of meat is. And it was huge so we had to share it. I'm not really a fan of steaks but even I had to admit that Morton's is really doing something right.

Mashed fries pancake, or something like that. By the time this thing came we were so full we couldn't even finish it and had to cancel dessert. This seem mediocre compared to the steak and the seafood platter, but on its own it's actually quite nice I guess. But quite overpriced at $25. And we fed like half of this to Haha (our dog, sort of) so Haha had a really good and expensive supper.

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar: Shiok Maki? I Don't Think So.

Pictures of the shiok maki from Koh Grill & Sushi Bar has been flooding my instagram for quite some time now. So I convinced K to go try it with me once my exams ended.

Boy, was it a mistake.

The queue for the place was superrrrrrrrr long. Like, it snaked almost all the way to the escalator. And it really got my hopes up.

We made reservations so it felt really good and badass to be able to cut to the front of the queue and waltz right in.

But that's about where the good part ended.

We were seated right next to this other couple, so we were actually sharing tables. There wasn't any space to shift the tables slightly apart as well because the aisle was really narrow. This made all conversations extremely awkward because, well, you can basically hear everything that the other table was talking about.

Still, if the food was good, I wouldn't be so upset about it.

We ordered both generations of the famous shiok makis and some other stuff.

 The first generation with eel.

The second generation with prawns.

The first bite was good enough. The yellow sauce was really nice and I like fish roe. But soon after, you realize that the filling is actually really small, and the more I ate it, the more I disliked it.

It isn't so much that it didn't taste nice. It's just that, with all that hype, I expected more from it. It just seemed so normal, even the Sushi Tei version can beat it hands down, and they're priced about the same.

We also had the grilled bacon wrap with enokitake mushroom and the tempura udon, but both were merely passable.

I have no idea what the hype is all about and what is up with that long queue but one thing is for sure, I don't think I'll want to come back to this restaurant again.

Dinner at Salt Grill & Sky Bar

We celebrated our 2nd anniversary at Salt Grill & Sky Bar. K was acting all secretive about it, refusing to tell me where we were going but I guessed it right from the start. :P

Salt Grill & Sky Bar is located on the 55th floor of ION Orchard. You go up to the fourth floor in the shopping mall, then the guy behind the counter will lead you through this like, passage way before you come to a private lift.

The lift only services the 4th floor and the 55th floor. But the lift is damn cool, the light will 'travel upwards' as the lift goes up.

Salt Grill & Sky Bar has reeeeaaaaallly dim lighting. It was so dim that you could hardly read the menu and you can't really see what you are eating as well. But I guess that's also to make the night view more contrasting.

There's a different section for the bar on the 56th floor.

We got a window seat. The view is simply amazing. I mean, you're right in the city centre and you're looking down from one of the tallest buildings there. you feel as if the world is at your feet.

But then it also made me realise, Singapore is actually not that well-lit at night compared to other cities.

 Bread for starters.

This was a complimentary (vegetable?) soup from the chef. But it tasted really weird in an uncool way so we both just left it.

Okay I don't remember what this is called. Some sort of tapas with cherry tomato and mayo?

I had the Barramundi. Ordered the salmon at first but they ran out of it.

K had some pork thing, which came with three types of pork parts and a caramelized apple.

Triple chocolate for dessert.

The food at Salt Grill & Sky Bar was exorbitantly expensive but the quality of the food was just meh. Luke Mangan advertised themselves as one of Australia's leading chefs and restauranteurs and is deemed highly regarded internationally as a shining example of Australia's culinary culture. But what I can conclude is that I've had better food for a fraction of the price. The serving was also quite small. I mean, I know it's fine dining, but still. For the price we paid, it really wasn't that fantastic but I guess the price is paid more for the view, the ambience and the service instead of what you're actually eating. I mean, what I remember from that night was what a great time I was having, what a great boyfriend I have, but not wow, this is really delicious food. But at least it was a very good dining experience.

They also had this machine to let you look at the view outside in three separate windows, one for morning, one for night, and a live view as well.

And we realized you could actually use it to spy on some of the apartments. Hahaha. Made me feel like I was an undercover agent. Super cool.

They also had this service where they will take a photo for you and print it out, kind of like a souvenir for dining there, which is quite a creative idea when you think about it.

 Random photo of the kitchen.

Sometimes when I think about it, I get really amazed at how K and I got together, and how far we have come from where we were. I mean, we really went through shit at the start, but I'm glad we've ironed all that out and it's not something that we need to go through again.

I'm a really weird person and I get very emotional at times. my mood swings are just crazy and I don't think anybody else can actually stand it and still love me for who I am other than K.

So an-dui ssi, I know you're reading this, and I just wanna say that I LOVE YOU :D

Seafood @ JB part 2 + Meldrum Walk near City Square

Continuing from our previous JB food trip, we went back to JB again on Friday because I had to replenish my contact lens supply.

The place is called Hiang Kee restoran, it kind of looks like our coffee shops selling tze char. The place is at Taman Sri Tebrau and is very near the checkpoint, only about 5 - 10 minuted by cab from City Square. The cab there cost us RM8 withou meter and RM5.40 with meter for the trip back. We wanted to walk out and take a bus back to City Square like how we usually do but we forgot to save our change for the bus ride.

Ordered salted egg crab this time round. Really love crab but always don't know how to eat. Hahaha. The only part that I don't have trouble eating is the pincer. But K was nice enough to peel off the shell for me so that it's easier for me to eat. <3 ^^

Ordered cereal crayfish also. So meaty and so shiok. And the cereal was really nice too. Would have went really well with rice, but then we didn't order any rice cos we didn't want to waste stomach space.

Ordered bean lala this time round. But I think I still prefer steam la la, too bad K doesn't eat. Why so picky about food one leh

But the la la this time round was so small, almost feel like I couldn't taste anything. In the end K finished most of the dish.

The aunty also kept telling us to try their specialty 'gong mian', which is just fried bee hoon what. But it was still very good.

And my absolute favourite of the day - cheese prawn. Each prawn was so well coated with cheese, and not in a sickening way. It was so good that I even ate the shell for some of them. I really love love LOVE this dish!! ^^

The meal came up to RM160.80 inclusive of 3 lime juices and 3 fried man tou. We changed our ringgit at a rate of 2.45 so the whole meal only cost $65.60 approximately. Damn cheap considering how much we ate, the two of us finished all those can you imagine.

After our movie, we went to try out the food at Meldrum Walk nearby City Square. Got to know about the place randomly while googling. Saw it from johorkaki's blog and decided to give it a try, venture out from our usual food haunts. Here are the coordinates.

It was surprisingly empty for a Friday night. Reading johorkaki's blog gave me the impression that it was going to be bustling with people, a bit like Bangkok's food streets. We went there around 8 but it was quite empty, some of the stalls were also closed.
I underestimated the size of the food street. Hahaha. Thought it'll only be like one backlane of food, but it was actually a very very long street, separated into Chinese food, Malay food and Indian food.

We went to the Chinese food section.

RM6 for a small size plate of orh jian. Don't really like raw food so ended up eating most of the egg only.

RM4 for a plate of Wanton Mee.

Stir-fried vege at RM7.

RM9 for one chicken wing and 2 huge ass chicken drumsticks.

Maybe because we were still quite full from lunch, but the food were not as good as I expected. The orh jian, the wanton mee and the vege were all mediocre and nothing memorable.

But the chicken was really ultimate shioks. It was very tender and juicy, with a hint of smoky taste at the same time.

Another must try is their soya milk, they put honey inside to sweeten the soya milk and it was damn refreshing and nice.

Can't wait to go back next week for more seafood + chicken drumsticks + soya milk.

Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee @ Sunshine Plaza

We always go to Sunshine Plaza for the dim sum, and very occasionally the thai food. But there's also the hokkien mee and the wanton mee stall that is always crowded as well.

And when there's a crowd, it means the food is good right? So k and I finally went to give the hokkien mee a try.

The place is called Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee, we ordered the hokkien mee (needless to say) and wanted the prawn omelette as well (I love prawn omelettes I don't know why), but they didn't have it anymore, which is really weird if you ask me, because they obviously have prawns, and egg, it's used in the hokkien mee, so why not prawn omelette leh?

Anyway, the hokkien mee reminds me of the ones sold in my secondary school, my favourite to date. I like mine watery and moist, and these were exactly like that, but they were a bit too sweet as well leh, would have been much better if they toned it down.

Victor's Kitchen @ Sunshine Plaza, Part 2

K and I dropped by Victor' Kitchen for dinner again the other day, and managed to order some things that we didn't order the first round.

But then there's the standard few that we just cannot miss!

Their pai kwat fun i.e. pork ribs rice. I feel like the one my mommy makes is much nicer, but K said he liked this. :\

Their har kaw was okay, but Royal China has much better ones leh.

Our first visit can be found here.
